Twitter Benchmark Analysis

Twitter Followers at BEGINNING of Semester: 180

Twitter Followers at END of Semester: 261

From September to October of this past semester is when I saw the largest increase in my Twitter Followers (I gained 83 in September). From analyzing Twitter Analytics, I think this is due to two key things. First of all, it seems that the more tweets that I have, the more followers. In November my amount of tweets decreased, and so did my followers (instead of gaining any, I actually lost 9). The second determinant is the hashtags I used. Earlier on in the semester, almost all of my tweets included a hashtag regarding the subject of the tweet (i.e. #advertising, #socialmedia, #journalism, etc.) This categorizing really helped me gain followers because it helped people find my twitter that otherwise wouldn’t have.

Something that I noticed is that a lot of my followers seemed to be VERY random, from @DevelopRobots to @VacationPoolHomes – both accounts that had nothing to do with the things I was tweeting about. Most of these random followers were the ones that I lost over the past few months. The followers I gained who are actual people in the marketing, advertising, or social media agency have been more consistent.

That being said, I think that the most important things I have learned this semester are the following:

  1. Interact with influencers and try to engage people in your field of interest.
  2. Use pertinent hashtags whenever possible.
  3. Tweet more. But not just anything- it needs to be engaging, relevant, and sharable content.
  4. Mix up the media. Include photos, graphs, videos, even soundcloud clips. I found that almost all of my most engaging tweets all included photos or some sort of visual.
  5. It’s important to not just come out with your own content, but engage with others (retweeting, quoting, etc.)

Current Kloutscore: 32

While analyzing my Kloutscore over the past few months, what I found to be most interesting is the graph that shows my score over the last few months.

As you can see from the graph, there was a HUGE jump in my Kloutscore from around October 10th to the 18th. So, I went back in my Twitter Timeline to see what sorts of things I was tweeting about at this time. Although they didn’t contain the #NHsmc hashtag, here are a few of my tweets at this time that seemed to drive this increase in social influence.

These are some examples of my tweets during this time. As you can see, most of them dealt with engaging other companies that already have a large fan following. What I’m most proud of over the semester in terms of my Twitter usage is that not only did I reach a higher Klout score, but I maintained it. Now my next goal is to get it even higher. Hopefully through a mix of my own content and engaging with others, I can do so!
