Reflecting on My Best Tweets of the Semester

It has been interesting this semester to tweet for academic and professional purposes. On my old Twitter account, I mainly tweeted sassy and sarcastic things that really didn’t matter at all. Now, I am proud of the new content I have created, shared, and curated.

All data about tweets was pulled from Twitter Analytics.

1) This tweet had the most impressions of my tweets for the class this semester. For this assignment, we created a unique hashtag and I chose #MediaAndEd. I used this hashtag with tweets that I thought were important to my program of Media & Education. I am particularly interested in the connections between social media and education which led me to looking into #Tweet4Change. I think this tweet was so popular because I used the program’s hashtag and #socialmedia, as well as targeting an influencer.

2) For this tweet I was targeting the influencer @BetterMakeRoom, which is a media campaign launched by Michelle Obama during that week. It is a project I really believe in so I wanted to draw attention to it. This tweet was liked by @BetterMakeRoom, and they started following me. They are now one of my most valuable followers. Too bad @FLOTUS didn’t follow me!

3) This tweet was for when we needed to make a Twitter collage. I found it challenging at first to use photos that would show up in the right dimensions. This is from my first month of tweeting, and looking back now, I wish I would have included more hashtags. Even if I had just changed “social media” to #socialmedia it would have been better. I enjoyed sharing these photos though, and I was excited for the engagement because at the time, I didn’t have many followers. I thought it was a cool thing to share because how many people still use wax seals? I loved showing off all the little details.

4) Rebecca started a campaign tweeting about #DistractedDrive and #DontTextAndDrive. I joined in to help draw attention to this issue, and with this tweet, I decided to also include #ItCanWait. This led to @ItCanWait replying and following me. This an issue I care about because I know too many of my friends who text and drive. It was cool to have @ItCanWait notice my tweet. I’m glad I could help to share the message more.

5) I am disappointed that this tweet didn’t have more impressions, but I am still proud of all the work I put into. First I used Google Trends to see what was happening and upcoming. I realized that National Coffee Day was the next day.

Then I created my own GIF by taking a video of my Keurig brewing. I was hoping people would enjoy my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle  mug. Looking back, I should have used Hootsuite to schedule this tweet so that it would have posted during the morning of National Coffee Day when people are first checking Twitter when they get up. I had fun creating the GIF for this tweet though, and I’m glad I know how to do that for the future!

6) I have been reading works by Renee Hobbs since I started my Media & Education program this summer. I was so excited when I realized she uses Twitter frequently. I made it my mission to engage with her as she is one of the leaders in the field of Media Literacy. I started with liking her tweets and retweeting her. This was the first time I actively tagged her in something I posted. I was so excited that she liked it. She did respond to one of my tweets later on in the semester, but my goal is still to get her to follow me back.

7) This tweet was modeled after a tweet I did at the beginning of the semester that had a lot of engagement. I made sure to tag the same influencers to try to engage them. My original tweet got the School of Education to retweet it and follow me. I was hoping with this tweet maybe I could get Newhouse to follow me. With this tweet, I did get a retweet from the School of Education again and Newhouse liked my tweet.

8) I had a lot of fun promoting News Engagement Day. I tweeted a lot about the event, but this was my tweet that had the most engagement. Thinking about News Engagement Day, I wanted to show that it wasn’t just for Newhouse students. A lot of students from outside of the school never go into Newhouse so I was hoping if I reached out to them to let them know a cool event was going on, that they might be interested in checking it out.

9) First of all, I will admit that this is a pretty embarrassing photo of me, but I was so excited for the event and needed to show I was there. Ethan’s talk was really interesting, and I’m glad I got to share a little bit about what I learned. It was definitely hard to sum up the most meaningful thing to me in a limited character count because there was so much valuable information. I considered live-tweeting the event, but I wanted to be able to focus more instead of staring at a screen. I thought it was cool that Ethan liked my tweet.

10)For this tweet I decided to share something as part of #WisdomWednesday. I just believe in putting out lots of positive and inspiring words on Twitter because sometimes the Internet can be a dark place.

I also made sure this was a title safe image. It took a while for me to adjust to posting horizontal photos that are title safe. I am used to being able to post any shape/size of photo. I do think it is crucial that the most important part of the photo is visible in the Twitter feed because no one wants to take the time to click it to see more.

Through this semester I learned that is really is hard work to maintain an interesting and engaging Twitter profile. I feel like I have learned a lot of valuable skills and tips for how to do it though.
