Constant Connection

When pondering the question “Why Do You Use Social Media?”, the first thing that comes to my mind is…”because I have to.” Society has made it almost impossible to go through life as a young professional without any social media profiles. I use social media for numerous reasons but the number one reason is to stay in constant connection with the world around me. This may include stalking all my friends on Snapchat to see what they are doing, who they are doing it with, and where they are (literally due to geotags).

Social media has become a part-time job for all of us in a way. When I wake up in the morning the first thing I do is turn to my phone and check all my feeds. Some may find this pathetic, however I like to be up-to-date on the latest trending topics of conversation. I use different social media for different purposes as well. I use Facebook and Twitter to browse on the latest news in politics and pop culture. I must admit I follow all things Kardashian.

Instagram and Snapchat however have become more of an obsession. There is a sense of urgency with Snapchat as well, as Mystorys expire after 24 hours. I feel obligated to constantly check Snapchat. If someone told me ten years ago that Snapchat would be the go-to place to see who your best friend is currently dating, or even what city they are living in, I would be appalled. This is society as we know it, for the good and the bad but ya gotta keep up!

  1. Adrianna – I totally agree with your point that it is impossible to go through life without any social media profiles, especially in Newhouse. I feel like if you are trying to enter any communications field, you need to have social media, your future jobs kind of expect it. As you said, social media is also a way that I keep up with news and trends in the world, not just my friends.
