Facebook – All the Power with All the Problems

2014 – Colorado legalizes weed, the ice bucket challenge takes over, and Meg gets a Facebook.

Though I was a late bloomer to the wonderful world of updating the world about my life, the platform was still a place I utilized to meet a potential college roommate, find old friends, and share photos. For my friends with Facebook before 2014, it was the place you could post a ridiculous video on a friend’s wall, post the most important profile picture with the hopes of getting 300+ likes, and stay in touch with every human you have ever met.

That was then – this is now.

Facebook today: opinions, opinions, political opinions, a few photos shared, viral videos/memes, and more opinions.

There are definitely a handful of Facebook friends that I believe should be banned for their misuse of messaging or content. But, some users actually do get banned for these actions. Facebook is trying to take a stand, and create a more welcoming environment, but they are not getting the correct offenders.

I am not sure if it was her 2:11am classic rant that got Maxine off Facebook to begin with, but even around 1pm the next day, she was still banned.

Facebook has become the most central point of information received and distributed for the world. With this huge audience, Facebook needs to take the necessary steps in monitoring the content available.

In an article from The Verge, Kastrenakes tells us Mark Zuckerberg’s personal 2018 challenge is to “fix Facebook” – whatever that may mean at this point. At first when I heard this, I hoped he is going to fix the fake accounts, the horrible ads, and the spam friending. But, if he can create a space with positive and enlightening conversations, then maybe the platform will no longer be a threat to society.

  1. Hi Meg!

I loved your intro for this post. I got a Facebook around the same time as you. Funny enough if it wasn’t for Facebook I wouldn’t have been able to awkwardly slide into your Facebook messages and we would not be roommates today. I hope Facebook starts to revise their policies and privacy settings.
