I Went Viral (Sort of)

Objective

My main objective was to create a meme that reached at least 500 views on Imgur. I also wanted to have lots of engagement with my Imgur link on other platforms, so hopefully getting more than 5 likes on a Facebook to Twitter share link.

Background

I changed my meme from the one I originally put in my marketing plan because after uploading it to Imgur, it didn’t perform well at all.

The new meme I used is a Sponegebob meme. During the dot exercise in class, there were a few Spongebob memes that performed pretty well, and I created a different Spongebob meme for a different class that performed well. I see a lot of SpongeBob memes throughout my daily Insta and Snap viewings. I even subscribe to a Snapchat page called “SpongeBob Snapz.” There is also a popular meme frame that is set up like this, “how I think I look: *image* how I actually look: *image*. For example,

I decided to combine this frame with a Spongebob frame and center it around Halloween because at the time, it was right after the weekend of Halloween ended so it was a trending topic.

Analysis

In my marketing plan I indicated that I would share my Imgur link on a few different platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and group text chains. I posted the link in my sorority Facebook group, which I noticed was the most effective. I then tweeted the link from my personal twitter. I think doing both of these things was more effective than sending the link to a group chat. I also put specific tags on the post in Imgur, which helped to drive engagement. I tagged the post: Spongebob, Halloween, Funny, Lol, Costume

In my first meme that didn’t work, I didn’t put any tags, which is why I think it failed. After posting the new one with the five tags, I watched the numbers increase evert minute. In the first 30 minutes I already had 200 views. I also gave my new post a clever title as opposed to a basic description. This could have led to more views because it was engaging and made the audience want to click into my meme.

Final engagement
