Influence Growth Analysis

Twitter:

  • Followers at the start of the class = 20
  • Current number of followers: 248
  • Percentage of Growth: 1,140%
  • I believe that the biggest reason for my 1,140% followers increase was the time that I took to follow a lot of people in my network. I think that following other people is the easiest way to get followers for yourself. Following people is literally letting them know “I’m here, I want to connect with you,” and then they have the choice of whether or not they’re going to follow you back. In order for people to want to follow you back, I believe it matters that your profile and content are engaging. It’s also crucial that you follow the right people. As a journalist, the content that I share on Twitter is mainly about the news. Therefore when I followed people, I focused on: journalists, writers, scholars; because people in those areas were more likely to relate to my content and therefore want to follow me back.

I think this tweet was successful because it was short, engaging, and featured two different media: a picture, and a link. One thing I know from this class, in addition to my own experience on social media, is that people are more likely to engage with your tweet if it’s short, simple, has engaging language, and includes media. This tweet was part of a class assignment aimed at “plugging” some of our work, and I would say I was successful with that!

I think this tweet earned the second most activity because of the journalist who I tagged in it. This tweet was part of the assignment to “jump in” on a conversation with an influential person, and I chose New York Times journalist Rukmini Calimachi. When people viewed her tweet, it’s likely that a lot of people viewed my response to her as well. Not only did I get over 4,000 impressions, I also had two people respond to what I said.

This tweet was part of the class assignment to share a gallery of pictures in an effort to spike engagement. The first thing I did was consider who my followers were: what kind of content will they likely connect and engage with? After that, I decided to share a few of the Pulitzer Prize-winning photos that I saw over the summer at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. Although the pictures in my tweet are sad, the overall message of my tweet is uplifting, and I knew fellow journalists could relate.

During our class’s viral content challenge, I decided to test some memes on Twitter and see what kind of engagement I could receive. I did what I do before I create almost all of my tweets: I asked myself who my followers were, and what kind of content they would relate to. I have a lot – the majority, I think – of followers who are SU alumni, and many of them are also sports reporters/fans. Once our football team had an embarrassingly bad loss to Boston College, I decided some content about the team would be timely and relatable. I then went on Imgur to see what kind of memes were going around and decided that the Squidward meme would work well, as the BC game was considered the final straw (i.e. the grave) for many SU football fans. (#nhsmc was put in reply to this tweet)

This tweet was for the class assignment of creating an organic meme/gif from our own picture gallery. It just happened that a few weeks before this assignment I had a mishap during a newscast – one of the cameras mistakenly turned on my face, when it was supposed to play right into a package. I confusedly stared at the camera and just kind of looked around. When I shared a video of this on Instagram, a lot of people responded to it and thought it was hilarious. I learned in com427 that funny and happy things are what people share/enjoy the most, so I figured this would be a good video to turn into a gif and share online. This tweet was part of the class assignment to post a graphic on Twitter using google trends. For this assignment, my goal was to find a topic that is not usually discussed that much, but because of current events, it becomes a popular discussion. Cuba is not usually a trending topic, but because of the success of its soccer team in October, many people were googling “Cuba.” Considering my followers are majority journalists, I shared the graphic within a context that they would be interested in, i.e. how sports affect the attention that countries receive.

This tweet was one of our very first class assignments: create a “native” Twitter video. Once again, considering my following, I wanted to post media that related to them. Also, we had two days to post this video (Tuesday and Wednesday), and my newscast is likely the most exciting thing I do during those two weekdays. Lastly, I wanted the video to be positive and uplifting, since content that’s positive and happy tends to receive more engagement.

This tweet was for our very first class post: pointing out social media “IRL” (in real life). I came across these works of graffiti while I was driving around Syracuse. It occurred to me that graffiti was a lot like social media: you post (create) something and share it in a social place, and people comment and reply (graffiti to answer). Because my post would likely be confusing to people who were not in my com427 class, I made sure my caption got my point across. I think this post received engagement because it had rich media (pictures), a short caption, and (in my opinion) featured an interesting way to look at graffiti.

This post was made for our class introductory tweet assignment. I’m not sure why this post received the 9th most engagement out of all of my class tweets, but my best guess is that it received engagement because it is an inviting, positive tweet that lets people know a little bit about me personally.

This tweet was part of the class assignment to execute a quote tweet. I came across this tweet from ABC about a 77-year-old woman sailing around the world completely on her own. I immediately thought about how impressive her feat is, and also thought about how I am 55 years her junior yet sometimes I walk up the hill and steps to my apartment and feel lightheaded. People tend to enjoy self-deprecating jokes that they can relate to, so I decided to share it.
