Let’s Go Viral

As the viral presidential campaigns of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were coming to a dramatic end, I took the opportunity to create a viral campaign of my own, based on an original meme about the election. This election has spurred a huge conversation about who and what represents America, therefore I figured people could relate to a meme that shows our election dilemma, yet also adds a bit of comic relief.

Objective:

  • To gain more interaction and clicks with the meme than I would without marketing
  • To go viral!

The meme:

In my attempt to go viral, I used a combination of promoted tweets with my twitter webcard, and also a few regular tweets with the Imgur link and a funny Gif. The non-promoted tweets on November 7th ended up bringing in the most engagement, followed by a promoted tweet on election day. I also had success with a 50% engagement rate on this tweet:

According to my Twitter campaign, I got much less engagement on November 5th and 6th which was the weekend leading up to election day. On November 5th, I had a promoted tweet that mentioned Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump’s twitter accounts along with #2016election. This tweet received 1,472 impressions and 43 engagements, which is the most engagement I had over the campaign, but only a 2.9% engagement rate. More people were able to see the tweet because of the mentions and hashtag, but a smaller percentage engaged.

Final engagement number: 573 Imgur views + 73 Twitter engagements = 646
