My Social Media Platforms: Influence Growth and Analysis

PART 1: INFLUENCE

Before taking this class, I never had a Twitter account so it was definitely a learning experience figuring out how to use the app. Now that I have an account I use it multiple times a day because it really is an incredible source for news and anything that is trending. I started out with zero followers and I now have 25 followers. According to Twitter analytics, my percentage of growth on Twitter is 2500%. I promoted my Twitter by letting my friends know that I created an account. I also asked my friends on Snapchat to give me a follow on Twitter. It was difficult to get followers at first because I had little content to work with but once I produced more content and engaged with other accounts my account became more successful. I am a fashion design major so I thought it might be useful to follow fashion accounts. The issue was that not a lot of these accounts follow back so it was difficult to gain a following from this. One of my tweets mentioned a verified account, podcast host Emma Gunavardhana. Emma liked my tweet, followed me back, and mentioned me in a tweet as well. This gave my account more engagement and I gained a couple followers as a result. When creating tweets, I tried my best to produce content based on my followers interests. I have several followers that love content related to fashion so a few of my tweets were geared towards them.

PART 2: EXECUTION

With everything going on the week before Thanksgiving break at Syracuse, I felt that it was necessary to voice my opinion on Twitter. In addition to tweeting, I attended the sit-in protest during this class. I came across this well written article from the Daily Orange and shared it with the class hashtag as well as a hashtag I have seen my peers use “#KentStepitUp.” According to Twitter Analytics, this was my most successful tweet. Even though only one of my followers liked this post, it received 246 impressions and 10 engagements. I believe this tweet was successful because I included a link to another form of media as well as a hashtag and my written opinion. The only thing that I believe might have enhanced this tweet is if I elaborated a little more on my opinion.

This tweet was created in collaboration with 3 of my peers from this class. We researched trending hashtags and decided to focus on #VeteransDay. Sadie Kamp, a member of my class group, originally tweeted at Syracuse questioning why the university as to why we do not dedicate a day to celebrate veterans. I retweeted her post with the class hashtag and shared an article from the Daily Orange about how Syracuse is currently ranked as the number one University for veterans. My tweet received 194 impressions and 8 engagements. My tweet also received 2 retweets and 3 likes. I learned about how important it is to engage with other accounts on twitter and this tweet was a strong example of that. If I could go back in time I would have probably added more text or some form of analysis on the link that was shared.

I created this tweet as a test for my meme campaign assignment. It received 75 impressions and 2 engagements. In this tweet, I am referencing the struggle of keeping track of your friends at college parties or generally during nights out. I was shopping for groceries with my friends and my friend Paige went to add spaghetti to the cart and one side of the box burst opened. The spaghetti went everywhere and as my friends and I were laughing I snapped a pic. This tweet had media variety because I used image and text. In this way, I believe it was more appealing to viewers. I wish I had added more hashtags such as #groceryfails in order to give it more exposure to the public.

I had a lot of fun creating Instagram posts for this class because I have always loved taking pictures and playing around with different filters. I created this account for this class so I started with zero followers and I now have 28 followers. This picture was taken on the first day it snowed in Syracuse this year. I was admiring the view from the window in my room. I used the Clarendon filter for this image because it beautifully contrasted the snow with the trees and window frame. I captioned it “winter is here!” and I tagged Syracuse as the location. I also included the emoji with multiple hearts to further emphasize the excitement of seeing the first snowfall of the season. This post received 8 likes which were from friends from home and my classmates. I think this post could be enhanced if it had been a gallery post and if I had included multiple shots of the snow from various angles.

Since it had just been Halloween weekend, I decided to make my feed a little more festive for the holiday. My goal was to also make my post a little more interactive. This is a picture of my friend Paige dressed as Freddie Mercury. I captioned it “comment below if you know who this is!” I also included #halloweekend to give my post more exposure in the Instagram community. My post received 5 likes and one comment. @msnyder1717 commented “Frank!” I also included a few emojis to make the post overall more appealing to viewers. If I wanted to make this post stronger I could have included more of my friends halloween costumes in a gallery post. I also could have added more hashtags such as #costume or #FreddieMercury. This class has taught me about the importance of incorporating hashtags into content and from now on I try to remember to include them.

I took this picture of my house when I went for a walk around my neighborhood one morning. I included five hashtags, besides the class hashtag, that best related to my post in order to give my image more exposure (see the five hashtags above). I used the Instagram filter Mayfair to slightly brighten the fall leaves and grass. I captioned the post “Morning walks” and added the emoji of a warm cup of coffee to give the post a more cozy feel. This post is one of my favorites because it was the most spontaneous. This post received 6 likes and 3 comments. @emilykimes commented “So pretty!!” and @msnyder1717 commented “#cold.” If I were to add anything to this post I would add a location or ask my viewers to comment their favorite fall drink in order to make the post more engaging.

Back in October, I went hiking with a group of friends in Green Lakes, a park about 20 minutes outside of Syracuse. It was especially beautiful because most of the leaves had changed color for fall. My friend Maddy was admiring the view and I decided to snap a picture. I loved the way the shadow made her appear as a silhouette and the trees were so colorful across the lake. This was one of my earlier Instagram posts and at the time I only had around 7 followers. Therefore, this post only received 3 likes. This image did not need much enhancing because it was beautiful on its own but I did use the lowest level of the Sierra filter. I added the “Green Lakes State Park” location, used an emoji that worked nicely with the post’s natural aesthetic, and captioned it “unreal.” If I was to redo this post, I would definitely add more hashtags because it would give it greater exposure to the public. A few examples of hashtags that might have made this post even more successful are #Fall, #View, or #Hiking. These three examples are broad so therefore, the post would attract a wider range of viewers.

For this tweet, I decided to create a poll in order to figure out what my friends and I should be for Halloween. My friends and I kept going back and forth and I thought I might as well ask the Twitter community for their feedback. In my tweet, I explained why I created the poll and made sure to include a couple festive emojis to further attract viewers. My poll was up for four days and four of my followers participated. ABBA won with 50% of the votes. In order to make my tweet more engaging I wish I had asked my followers to comment their favorite costumes or Halloween candy. I could have also followed up with a tweet of my Halloween costume and thanked my followers for voting. It is always crucial to include hashtags in order to get more exposure so besides the class hashtag maybe I could have included #halloweencostumes.

For anyone who has a dog, you know how hard it is to be away from your dog for a long period of time. I found a cute photo I took of my dog, Leo, and decided that it was too cute to not share on Twitter. I captioned it “The more this semester flies by the more I miss this face.” I included two sad emojis to emphasize how much I miss him. I received two likes on this photo but it definitely deserves more than that. I used the Instagram filter Valencia to slightly enhance the colors of the image. If I was to change anything about this tweet I would definitely add multiple hashtags such as #dog or #missingyou.

This tweet was one of my most successful posts of the semester. I have been listening to the Emma Guns Podcast ever since I studied abroad in London last spring. She hosts her podcast on mental health, beauty tips, fashion advice, and healthy eating. I was researching the top ten fashion podcasts in the UK and she was listed in an article. I absolutely loved her advice and she had amazing guests on her show so listening to her podcast ended up becoming a part of my morning routine. The assignment was to look at the trending Twitter hashtags and #InternationalPodcastDay was trending. I decided to tweet @emmaguns to thank her for her great advice and made sure to include a few emojis to make my tweet more attention-grabbing. I woke up to her reply, like, and retweet (see above) and it truly made my day. @emmaguns replied to me by saying “Thank you so much. Thank you so much for listening. So glad to have you as a listener. xx” She also followed me back so it was exciting to gain a follow from a verified account. As a result of her retweet, my account received 677 impressions, 26 engagements, and 6 new profile clicks.
