Started From The Bottom: How I Became A Twitter Influencer

When I first started using Twitter for Social Media Theory & Practice, I had 12 followers and a Klout score of 10. By the end of the course, I had 82 followers and a final Klout score of 44. I was able to jump the ranks on Twitter as an influencer through my following Top 10 tweets.

10.

My number 10 tweet ironically enough is the first tweet I posted for class. It was viewed 113 times and engaged with 7 times for an engagement rate of 6.19%.

9.

This tweet was one of our class assignments where we had to take a piece of breaking information and use it as flow and stock content on Twitter. It was viewed 62 times and engaged with 4 times for a rate of 6.45%. Part of the success of this tweet was tagging @futureofmuseums because they engaged with it and so did @AAMers (the group Future of Museums is a part of).

8.

This tweet was executed as part of our class’s assignment to tweet a selfie during Spring Break. It was viewed 151 times and engaged with 10 times for a rate of 6.62%. This might be one of my most favorite tweets because I got to enjoy delicious chicken noodle matzah ball soup with my grandma (she took this picture for me).

7.

For this tweet, our class was assigned to create our own Twitter cards. I used my tweet to promote the gallery where I work. They picked up the tweet as well. It was viewed 15 times and engaged with once for a rate of 6.66%.

6.

Sometimes I used the class hashtag to promote things I was doing or accomplishments I was proud of. Using the hashtag, #museumed, definitely drove the bulk of my engagement on this tweet. It was viewed 124 times with 9 engagements for an overall engagement rate of 7.3%.

5.

For this tweet, I responded to the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s tweet about their newest Pop Art exhibition. They liked it and replied to me, which boosted my engagement rate. It was viewed 42 times and engaged with 3 times for a rate of 7.2%.

4.

I tweeted this picture because I thought everyone could use a dose of cuteness in their day. I have no idea exactly why I got so much engagement on this tweet (It probably was because of cute kid art). It was viewed 116 times with 10 engagements, making the engagement rate 8.6%.

3.

This tweet came from our class learning how to use Klout. I looked up Professor Grygiel and found that she was in the top .1% of users talking about #socialmedia. (Totally not surprising) I felt like congratulating her via Twitter. She liked it and so did many of my classmates. This tweet was viewed 70 times and engaged with 6 times for a rate of 8.57%.

2.

Follow Friday was an assignment from our first class that got some good engagement, so I tried to use #FF a couple times through the semester. This tweet welcomes my friend to Twitter. It was viewed 113 times and engaged with 13 times, for a rate of 11.5%.

….drumroll please…

1.

One of our in-class assignment was to create a Twitter poll. I took advantage of the Final Four buzz on campus for my poll. Most of the engagement came from my classmates. It was viewed 111 times and had 17 engagements with an overall engagement rate of 15.3%.

Conclusion

I was not surprised to see that my most engaging tweets were media tweets since Twitter counts the number of times a user clicks on an image as an engagement. What was surprising was the fact that most of these tweets were posted during the month of April. I think my success in April came from the fact that I began to use the class hashtag for things other than assignments and for things that I am passionate about.

I had a lot of fun with this course and learned so many new skills. Thanks for everything, Professor Grygiel and the students of Social Media Theory & Practice!
