The Making of a Meme: Spongebob Thanksgiving

Objective

Spongebob Squarepants memes have gone viral for awhile now. His character is recognizable to many people and the animation draws in humor. There’s a specific Spongebob meme frame of “Ight Imma Head Out” that has gone viral with different captions and added images. In the meme frame, Spongebob is making an annoyed face and is ready to get out of any situation. This is relatable to people who are in situations that they find irritating, and is an easy meme frame to copycat over and over again.

My goals of this campaign were to bring humor and create a conversation on Imgur with people interacting with my meme. Although having people see and relate with a meme is important, I really wanted to make sure there was conversation around it. I chose phrases in quotes that I thought would be relatable to people in my audience. Everyone has experienced someone criticizing them for something in their lives, but I wanted to hit home on certain quotes that dig a little deeper. I wanted to begin to circulate the meme after Halloween and closer to Thanksgiving to match my content. My overall objectives were 500 views on Imgur and 5 comments on Imgur, both of which I surpassed.

Analysis

My strategy was to pass my link to a specific audience that would appreciate it. My planned audience was young people and college kids who are familiar with Spongebob or people who have had awkward Thanksgiving conversations with their family members. Both those communities ended up commenting on my Imgur post. I promoted my post on Twitter to engage the younger population of people who follow my accounts, which did get engagement, but wasn’t the top strategy that worked. I think the issue was that people did not have as much of an incentive to click the link as they were scrolling through their timeline. The most beneficial strategy was messaging the link to group messages and Facebook groups I’m in. That action made sure that people had a direct connection to me and had a notification on their phone to look at my meme. Having my message pop up on their phones gave more of the incentive to click, which was exactly what I was looking for. I found it interesting that people were interacting with my meme in different comments, whether they related to the Spongebob portion or the family Thanksgiving dinner portion. It was clear to see that the Imgur community is a strong meme loving community. My final engagement number was 4,386 views. No one has remade my meme yet, but maybe when Thanksgiving is a little closer they might.
