An internet meme is a representation of a joke or idea that we all enjoy because they are relatable. Memes were created to show that we all have more in common than we may think and can relate and laugh at something that is so universal. The official definition according to the dictionary is “an idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads from person to person within a culture.” I fully believe memes are intended to bring us entertainment and laughter. The only serious part about them is how much thought and intelligence can go into some of them and I have a lot of respect for the minds who come up with clever and thoughtful ones.
This is one of my favorite recent memes because it is taking something that is so nostalgic for my generation and applying it to something relevant. Drake and Josh is a beloved show for anyone my age and to see this in reference to the situation with Megan Markle and the royal family instantly made me laugh and think “that is genius.”
This is an example of a picture or character becoming an ongoing meme with neverending captions. The Baby Yoda became a phenomenon and is still being used for memes that are being shared nonstop. I like this one because everyone can relate to leaving five minutes before they are supposed to be somewhere and it also uses this character that everyone has been obsessing over.
Hi Tess! I thought this was a really great post as you gave a great definition of what a meme is. I also think that you gave two great examples that show people the funny and comical side of a meme that you talk about in your post but also the relatable side that is very common for many people in real-life scenarios. I felt like both of the memes chosen in your post were relatable to my life and gave me a good laugh at the same time. Nice job!
