Twitter Influence

Klout Score Beginning: 29.38

Klout Score End: 38.40

Twitter Followers Beginning: 367

Twitter Followers End: 368

***Note: the beginning and end totals are from the total I put in the google doc at the start of the semester, and my total followers now.  However, when looking at twitter analytics each month from January to now, it says I gained a total of 16 followers over this period.

Honestly, I am thoroughly shocked by the lack of followers I gained over the semester.  I completed all of the twitter assignments on a daily basis, and even aside from those I very regularly engaged many different people and accounts on twitter various times throughout any given week.  I have been an avid twitter user since high school, so the constant use of twitter was nothing new to me when it came to this class, on the contrary it was very much welcomed.  My main hypothesis as to why I only gained one follower throughout the semester is a combination of things.  First, I think in reality I gained more followers than this, and this is evident from the twitter analytics page which tells me I gained 16 total followers over this period.  Perhaps some of my older followers who I do not keep in touch with anymore got annoyed with me filling up their feed with seemingly random content and decided to unfollow me.  This I could find understandable, and the only real reason my total did not change through the semester because I know for certain I gained more than one follower.  I think the fact that my Klout score had a pretty big increase demonstrates how much I used twitter over the semester, perhaps this just did not translate into more followers.

However, of the things that did work, I found much more success in tweets when I included relevant hashtags, tagged relevant accounts, and included any type of picture/video/media.  These tweets are clearly more appealing to followers, and almost always lead to more engagement.

Personally, I have always and will continue to use twitter on a daily basis.  However, I use it it more to consume the media than to actually create it (prior to this class).  Normally, I simply scroll through my feed and throw the occasional response or retweet, but for the most part I really am not throwing content out there all that often.  I think this can explain why my Klout score increased due to the daily twitter assignments, but my followers did not.  The tweets below show that I did receive a lot of engagement on many of my tweets, and even looking back I had a handful of tweets that received multiple favorites and retweets.  That is why I am still pretty confused and disappointed at my lack of follower growth through the semester (mostly because my ratio is all out of whack, just kidding).

All in all, I would still consider my experience through this semester a success.  I have increased my Klout score and learned many new tricks to receive more engagement on my tweets in the future.  Hopefully, this future will hold more followers than the present does.

Frankly I am not sure why this tweet was in the top 10 for me, as it had extremely low engagement and not that many impressions.  The only reason I can think is because I tagged the Warriors (@warriors) who a very large following, and perhaps those people are the ones who viewed my tweet and led to it ranking in the top ten.
